Wales’ first standard-gauge heritage railway, reopened in 1978 on the Carmarthen–Aberystwyth line, the last in Wales to lose Brunel’s broad gauge, and now four and a half miles up the Gwili valley.
The Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway opened to Brunel’s broad gauge from Carmarthen to Conwil in 1860, and the route became part of the Great Western’s long, meandering line to Aberystwyth, the last in Wales to be converted to standard gauge, in 1872. Floods cut the line near Aberystwyth in December 1964, passenger trains ended in 1965 and the track was lifted in 1975. The preserved railway runs north from Abergwili Junction near Carmarthen up the Gwili valley through Bronwydd Arms.
