Kuranda Scenic Railway

Navvies hand-carved 15 tunnels and 37 bridges up Barron Gorge in the 1880s; trains still pause at the falls’ lookout above the rainforest.

The line exists because tin miners on the rain-lashed tablelands above nearly starved in the wet season of 1882, and the colony answered with a railway straight up the forested escarpment. Its signature moment comes at Stoney Creek, where the carriages creep across a curved trestle almost under the waterfall’s spray. Locomotives wear the Buda-dji rainbow-serpent artwork of the Djabugay people, and most visitors pair the climb with a Skyrail cableway glide back over the canopy.
