Steam since 1978 on a preserved stretch of the Highland Railway main line, one of only a handful of former main lines saved in Britain: from Aviemore through Boat of Garten to Broomhill.
The Inverness and Perth Junction Railway, later part of the Highland Railway, linked Aviemore with Forres by way of Boat of Garten and Broomhill; the Strathspey Railway preserves ten miles of it, one of only a handful of former main lines saved in Britain. Its trains leave from platform 3 of the national station at Aviemore and pass the four-road engine shed the Highland Railway built there in 1898, whose engines still carry the 60B shedplate of British Railways days.
