Cream-and-green carriages gliding past rubber plantations: colonial-era glamour from the Lion City to Siam.

The carriages began life on New Zealand’s Silver Star sleeper before a lavish rebuild made them Southeast Asia’s grandest hotel on wheels, launched in 1993. From the teak-railed observation deck at the tail, Malaysia unrolls at ambling pace: kampong villages, the tin-country hills around Ipoh, endless ranks of oil palm and rainforest. The classic three-day run north pauses for Penang’s shophouse streets before Thai karst country and the arrival in Bangkok, pyjama breakfasts giving way to black-tie dinners.
