Austria’s lake district by rail: from Attnang-Puchheim along the Traunsee past the imperial spa of Bad Ischl to the shore opposite Hallstatt, the picture-postcard village mirrored in its emerald lake.

Opened in 1877 to bring summer visitors to the imperial resorts, the Salzkammergutbahn winds through the heart of Austria’s Lake District. From Attnang-Puchheim it runs the length of the Traunsee, calls at the spa town of Bad Ischl where Franz Joseph took his summers, and reaches the west shore of the Hallstättersee opposite the village of Hallstatt, whose lake-and-mountain tableau is among the most photographed in the Alps. The line ends on the Ennstal watershed at Stainach-Irdning.
