The Kingswear branch of 1864, sold by British Rail to the Dart Valley company in 1972: steam from Paignton over Goodrington Sands and along the Dart estuary to Kingswear, for the ferry to Dartmouth.
The Dartmouth and Torbay Railway reached Kingswear on 10 August 1864, built to Brunel’s broad gauge and converted to standard gauge in May 1892. It is unusual among Britain’s heritage lines in being run as a commercial business rather than by volunteers: the Dart Valley company sells the train and the ferry across the river to Dartmouth as one trip. Beyond Goodrington the line crosses the viaducts at Hookhills and Broadsands, passes the loop at Churston and runs through Greenway Tunnel down to the Dart estuary.
