Frecciarossa 1000 sets cross from Rome over the Apennines and the Po plain via Florence and Bologna to reach Venice in under four hours.
The Venice arrows leave Rome on Europe’s oldest purpose-built high-speed line (the Direttissima, begun in 1970) climb through the Apennine tunnels past Florence, then swing north-east across the Veneto plain. Padua’s domes and the Euganean hills mark the final act before the causeway: a two-minute glide across open water into Santa Lucia, where the platform ends at a vaporetto stop. Under four hours from the Colosseum’s city to the Grand Canal.
