A Frecciarossa 1000 hit 393.8 km/h on this Turin–Milan high-speed line in a 2016 test, an Italian rail speed record.
Italy’s north-western high-speed leg opened in stages around the 2006 Winter Olympics and was completed in 2009, putting Turin an hour from Milan across the rice country of the upper Po plain. In spring the paddies around Vercelli flood into a mirror-world, risotto country doing its best impression of a lake district, with the whole Alpine arc from Monviso to Monte Rosa standing along the northern horizon. Frecciarossa 1000s share the run with Italo and through trains continuing down the spine to Rome and Naples.
