The Furness Railway’s 1869 branch to Windermere, reopened in 1973: three and a half miles of steam from Haverthwaite to Lakeside, where trains still connect with the lake steamers.
The Furness Railway opened its branch to Lakeside on 1 June 1869 and advertised train-to-boat connections from the start, with summer excursions from Lancashire running through to meet the lake sailings. British Railways closed it to passengers in 1965, road building on the A590 cut off the southern end, and the surviving stretch from Haverthwaite reopened on 2 May 1973. Two ex-LMS 2-6-4 tank engines bought by its directors became the core of its steam fleet.
