The East Coast Main Line has been racing to Scotland since 1862, when the Flying Scotsman first left King’s Cross at 10:00: a departure kept for over a century. Azumas now do the run in around four and a quarter hours, past the great cathedral view at Durham, over the Tyne into Newcastle, then along the Northumberland cliffs to cross Robert Stephenson’s Royal Border Bridge at Berwick. The finale into Waverley, under Arthur’s Seat and the Old Town skyline, is the best station approach in Britain.
