Corkscrews down Romsdalen past the 1,100 m Trollveggen, Europe’s tallest vertical cliff, via the Stavem spiral tunnel and stone Kylling Bridge.

A late branch off the Dovre Line, finished in 1924, it spends much of its 114 km descending from 659 m at Dombås to barely four metres above the fjord, tracking the glass-green Rauma river. Film crews keep returning, the valley stood in for the Hogwarts Express route in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and in tourist season the trains slow right down at the great viewpoints. Åndalsnes arrives as pure theatre, ringed by 1,500 m Romsdalen peaks with buses onward to Trollstigen.
