Verona–Bologna railway

Thirty seven years to cross the Po plain: begun at Bologna in 1887, over the river at Ostiglia in 1911 and finished into Verona on 1 February 1924. Fifty two minutes now.

Part of the axis that carries the Brenner railway south to the Bologna–Florence line and on to Rome, and one that FS calls “fundamental”; it belongs to Line 1 of the Trans-European Transport Networks. For nearly all of its history most of it was single track, and the doubling was finished only on 26 July 2009, with the second track between the crossover at P.C. Ostiglia Nord and Poggio Rusco.
