The Simplon’s Italian approach, down the Toce and along the western shore of Lake Maggiore by Stresa and Arona; the rails reached Domodossola in 1888.
One of Italy’s busiest lines for both passengers and freight, and the southern approach to the Simplon Tunnel: through it Milan and Domodossola connect to Brig, and from there direct trains once ran to Paris by Lausanne and Geneva and to Brussels and Luxembourg by Basel. The line crosses the lower Varese province, the Ossola valley and the shore of Lake Maggiore.
