The last railway in Jutland, through Brønderslev and Hjørring to the ferry quays at Frederikshavn; it reached Aalborg itself in 1879, when the Limfjord bridge opened.
The Vendsysselbanen reached Frederikshavn from Nørresundby in 1871, but it joined the rest of the Danish network only in 1879, when the Limfjord railway bridge carried it over the water into Aalborg. It runs north to Hjørring and turns east there for the coast, so the rails cover about 80 km where the road manages 60. Banedanmark owns it; DSB works the through trains and Nordjyske Jernbaner the local ones. Three branches still leave it — to Aalborg Airport at Nørresundby, to the ferry port of Hirtshals at Hjørring, and to Skagen at the far end.
