The “Deerstalker Express”: fall asleep at Euston, wake up crossing Rannoch Moor with red deer at the window.
The Highland sleeper pulls out of Euston as one long train and quietly divides at Edinburgh in the small hours, its portions fanning out to Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William. The Fort William cars draw the romantics: by breakfast the CAF-built rooms, some with double beds and en-suite showers, are rolling past lochs that have never seen a road, porridge arriving as Loch Treig fills the window. It is the closest thing Europe offers to waking up inside a landscape painting.
