The longest railway on Earth: 9,289 km, eight time zones and seven nights between Moscow and the Pacific.
Life aboard settles into a rhythm no timetable conveys: samovar tea at the end of the corridor, provodnitsa attendants ruling each carriage, platform vendors selling smoked omul where Baikal glitters outside. Begun in 1891 to stitch the tsar’s empire together, the line remains Russia’s working spine, with freight and local trains weaving around the Rossiya as it crosses birch taiga, steppe and the ranges of the Far East. Most travellers break the week at Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk or Ulan-Ude; the train itself just keeps rolling.
