The Halle end of the line that reached Vienenburg in 1872, ninety two kilometres by Könnern, Sandersleben and Aschersleben to Halberstadt on the northern edge of the Harz.
A 123 km non-electrified main line north of the Harz, opened in sections between 1862 and 1872 by the Magdeburg–Halberstadt Railway Company and now the main link between Halle and the northern Harz towns. DB Netz maintains all of it except the disused stretch from Heudeber-Danstedt to Vienenburg; since 1996 that traffic has gone round to the south by Wernigerode. At the Halle end a separate single-track electrified S-Bahn line runs alongside as far as Halle-Trotha, with no connection between the two.
