Ionian Railway

Six hours down the instep and toe of Italy, from Taranto by Metaponto, Sibari and Crotone to the Strait of Messina; the sections were joined into one railway in 1875.

The Ferrovia Jonica runs 472 km down the instep and the toe of Italy, from Taranto through Sibari and Crotone to Reggio Calabria, crossing Apulia, Basilicata and Calabria. For most of that distance it keeps to the shore of the Ionian Sea.
