Zafra–Huelva railway

Built in 1889 to carry Sierra de Aracena ore down to the quays at Huelva, and still crossing it past halts named for villages miles from the line: Jabugo, Almonaster, Valdelamusa.

Guillermo Sundheim, a Spanish-German entrepreneur, began this line in the late nineteenth century, and when it opened in 1889 it ended the isolation of the Andévalo and the Sierra. Junctions off it fed the mining branches, so for many years it carried heavy freight down to the Port of Huelva; the Compañía del Ferrocarril de Zafra a Huelva ran it until RENFE took over in 1941. As the Huelva mines closed the traffic went with them and the track was left to age, and closure was considered before modernisation began in the 2000s. It is 180.8 km of Iberian gauge, single and unelectrified, and Adif calls it line 512.
