Szeged–Békéscsaba railway

Line 135 strikes east across the Great Hungarian Plain through Hódmezővásárhely and Orosháza; the rails carry on past Békéscsaba to Salonta, over a border drawn in 1920.

MÁV line 135 was opened in 1870 by the Alföld–Fiume Railway Company as part of its Oradea–Békéscsaba–Szeged–Subotica–Sombor–Osijek route, built to connect the Great Plain to the port of Fiume while avoiding Budapest; the state bought the company out in 1884. Trianon cut the through route at both ends, and what stayed in Hungary is now split between lines 136, 135 and 128, with Hódmezővásárhely and Orosháza as the junctions that matter. The last big rebuild was in the 1970s and 1980s, and current renewals aim at a uniform 80 km/h on welded rail. MÁV 6341 railcars worked it until November 2020; since then it is M41-hauled trains again, freight is regular, and since 2021 the Szeged–Hódmezővásárhely tram-train uses the first few kilometres.
